Betty Wasserman, an award-winning interior designer, provides “the best interior designs in New York City,” according to one industry source. She is a well-known artist who has received high appreciation for her excellent interior designs in The Hamptons from the media, the design community, and clientele, and her New York designs have been featured in numerous prestigious publications
Betty Wasserman‘s name constantly comes up when talking about interior design in New York. She has established herself as one of the greatest New York interior designers since starting her business in 1996. She combined her experience as a private art dealer for ten years with her enthusiasm for design and architecture, and the result was a very successful mix, with a warm and minimalist attitude.

Her debut in interior design happened by chance. Betty had been working for ten years as an art dealer when one of her clients that had recently bought a house asked her to assist him and his wife in designing the apartment’s interior. Betty immediately assembled a team and ripped up the wall-to-wall carpeting, as well as all of the garish mirrors that were strewn throughout the area.
“Somehow it came together, then, of course, we did an art collection and that was my first project. Once I realized that I was pretty good at it and I really liked it, then I decided to go back and take classes and learn how to properly do a floor plan and reflected ceiling plan and all of that.”

It was almost natural for her to start her own business after the first client. Her thinking and circumstances were ideal because she already had an art company and an assistant. It was a simple shift, and the two companies complement each other perfectly. After all, design and art are inextricably linked. Wasserman’s exclusive New York City design studio is now located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.
She has created for the city’s most stylish and exclusive addresses from her inconspicuous studio. She also has a personal property and satellite studio in The Hamptons, where she creates several luxury residences that have been published in leading design magazines. Betty Wasserman also mentions that designing in New York may have some unique characteristics.
“You have to be extremely strategic with your space, between the most expensive square foot in the world and the most expensive flat in the world, any space in the city must be well planned: luxury space cannot be wasted in Manhattan residences.”
Betty Wasserman
She also highlights how people used to prefer closed kitchens, but now times have changed, and it’s the opposite now: an open kitchen matches the modern lifestyle, in which you must maximize space and want to communicate with others while cooking.
“The spaces have to function. They have to work well and they have to be beautiful, and they have to be bulletproof.”

Betty has a favorite project out of all of them: her own Southampton loft. She chose to build her own house after searching for more than a year for suitable properties. She engaged an architect and began putting all of her ideas for lines, forms, and high ceilings into action.
“It’s not that it’s the biggest project I’ve ever had, not that it had the biggest budget by far (laughs) but because it was done for me and my family and it was so personal”
Betty Wasserman
She also mentions how she always tries to have a say and to be involved in every aspect of the project whether it is the interior design or the architectural part of the project. She highlights the importance of paying attention to both the inside and the outside of a house since they complete each other.
“Architects like to design from the outside in, and designers design from the inside out.”
Betty Wasserman
And this is only the beginning, indeed Betty has no plans to retire even after 20 years in this field of work. She says the goal is to take things a little slower, choosing two significant projects instead of three, for example. The interior designer highlights the importance of loving her job which has kept her in the business for so many years and even more to come.
