1. Choosing a rug that’s too small.
The rug needs to set the rules of the room, like an anchor to your furniture. In a living room, the rug defines your space and conversation area and it should be large enough. In a bedroom, the rug must be at your feet when you go out of bed and also it should give you a comfortable sensation.
2. Not trying layering.
You should layer the rugs because maybe you have one that is too big but then you have one that looks perfect on top of it. Why not? Be bold! The other option if your room is too big is to put two or more rugs side by side.
3. Leaving your wall-to-wall carpeting bare.
“Don’t be afraid to layer an area rug over carpet,” says Oakey. “It adds playfulness, and pulls together your room with the boundaries it needs.”
4. Choosing your rug last.
The rug is the starting piece, so choose it first then everything else, the contemporary rug should tie a room together.
“When we’re designing a room, we’ll choose the rug and then throw pillows, textiles for curtains, and more on the floor with it, and pick whatever goes with the rug best,” says Lewis.
5. Being afraid of pattern
Contrast and different colors look perfectly in a room to create a happy space.
“Brown walls, a brown couch, and a brown rug will make a room look flat and bland,” says Oakey.
6. Skipping the rug pad.
A rug pad will secure your contemporary rug and it prevents you and your guests from sliding around. Rug tape does nothing for your so the option to go is that rug pad you have been avoiding.
7. Missing out on a discount.
Be aware of the discounts that are out there! A rug can be a really expensive piece, so it would be great if you could buy that same one you really want for half the price. Pay attention!
